Returning Students E-News” is an undertaking from the Office of Student Affairs and other departments to reach out to YOU about life at Chatham. This year’s edition is jam-packed with more information and updates as campus is more vibrant than ever – from being a fully co-educational institution, to having 18 thriving NCAA Division III collegiate sports teams, to welcoming a new community of students shaped by the incoming new and transfer students and YOU. We hope you’ll be excited to see our continued dedication to Chatham’s rich legacy even as changes are made to support the growing student body and institution.

NEW – Student Engagement Mobile App

Student Affairs is excited to launch the ChathamU Mobile App powered by Involvio!  The ChathamU App is now available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.  Search ChathamU Mobile App and look for the Chatham C!  You can also  use these links on your mobile devices:


Please login using your Chatham username and password. Please note, use your username and not your full email (example C.Carson) It is important you only use your USERNAME (Example: Carson.Cougar) and do not add in  If you use your full email then it will cause an error.  You password is your Chatham password.  Forgot your password?  Reset it at myChatham.


The ChathamU App will replace the wall calendar of activities that Student Affairs printed each semester.  This will help us be more eco-friendly and put Chatham on a mobile platform for events and services.  The app has many exciting features that departments/offices can take advantage of to promote services, resources, and events.  The current app content was populated via the Calendar Callout in June on myChatham.  We are working with IT on an integration between the app and myChatham, but until then we will do callouts for bulk updates to the app. You can schedule a demonstration to learn about more about the app and how your department can utilize the platform and upload/edit any events.  During this demonstration we will brainstorm a plan for any content, events, and identify a staff member from your office who can be trained in updating the app.  Please complete the ChathamU Mobile App Demonstration Request Form to set a meeting up.  Please note, demonstration appointments will be available beginning August 28.  It is impossible to schedule demonstrations during orientation week due to student events and activities.


The ChathamU App can also be accessed via the web, but we strongly encourage using the mobile version if able.  The web version does not have as many features although more will be added in the near future.  You can access the web version by visiting and clicking login at the top right corner. Then, select the app and choose to login online.  From there, choose Chatham University and follow sign-in instructions.  Note, when using this option, you must use the guest email and set up a password. It will not sync with your Chatham credentials. There is a help/chat feature in the bottom right corner if you have any issues.


As previously shared, we are excited to launch the ChathamU Mobile App and eager to work with each of you. Over the fall term we will be working continuously to develop and improve the content.  Please be patient with us as we launch this new platform.  A special thanks to staff in University Marketing & Communications, Athletics, and Information Technology Services who assisted the Student Affairs staff with the implementation.


Finally, you will be asked to set up a profile. These questions are determined by the company that powers our app.  Currently, it only offers a female and male option. We are working on an update that will include a custom answer and ask about preferred pronouns.  Please note, these questions are optional and you do not have to complete them.  We will work to make the update as soon as possible and apologize for this issue.  We pride ourselves on being an inclusive campus and are happy the company is working to address this with us.

Student Health & Wellness

NEW! NEW! NEW! How Does Student Health Services Work?



  • In an effort to improve the quality of our services and provide a more comprehensive health care, Chatham University and the UPMC-Urgent Care of Shadyside have partnered this year to attend your urgent health needs at their location, a few miles away from our campus.


  • If you are a registered student, no fee is required for basic issues (listed below). Major issues will be billed accordingly, to your insurance provider.



  • The Health Services will continue its operations by providing FIRST AID and guidance, when in need, to visit the Urgent Care facility.
  • If you decide to visit the Student Health Services because of not feeling well, our Medical Assistant will help you navigate your way, when in need, to the UPMC-Urgent Care facility located in Shadyside. This staff member will aid you with the necessary arrangements for transportation to have a successful visit and will provide instructions when in need to come back to campus.
  • The Health Services operations are as follow:

o   Office hours:               Monday – Thursday: 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.

o   Location:                     Woodland Hall, Ground Level

o   Phone number:         (412) 365-1714

  • Other instances, in which by choice, you decide to go on your own or accompanied by a friend, to the Urgent Care facility, you may:

o   Call Public Safety at (412) 365-1230. Let the Staff Officer responding to the call know that you need a transport to the UPMC-Urgent Care facility. This staff member will respond accordingly and assist you with the needed transportation to the above facility. Instructions on how to return to campus will be provided by the staff member.

o   Take the shuttle that goes to Oakland and makes a loop in Shadyside into UPMC- Urgent Care.

o   Arrange for personal transportation to visit the UPMC-Urgent Care facility. Uber and Z-Trip are usually the preferred for taxi transportation.


  • NOTE FOR CAMPUS RESIDENTS: If you do not feel well, utilize the Residence Life On-Call Protocol stipulated by your hall or apartment.



The UPMC-Urgent Care facility is located in Shadyside, a 10-minute ride from our main campus.

The medical staff at Urgent Care is ready to help you with the following services:

  • History of the chief complaint;
  • History of the present illness;
  • Review of social and/or family history;
  • Review of appropriate systems and vitals as appropriate (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, etc.);
  • Physical exam by physician including Sports, Camp and Driver License Physicals;
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests including pregnancy, EKG, rapid strep, rapid mono, and glucose testing, fecal blood hemocult, Pulse O2 and urinalysis. All others are to be paid for by the patient or patient’s insurance;
  • Review of test(s) results and diagnosis;
  • Review of treatment options;
  • Procedures needed including minor suturing, minor foreign body removal;
  • Discharge instructions;
  • Typical diagnosis included in full service visits includes: Minor Burns, Minor Gastrointestinal Disorders, Upper Respiratory Infections, Allergies, Sprains, X-Rays, Blood Draws, Abrasions, Insect Bites/Bee Stings, Ear Infections, Fevers, Poison Ivy, and Rashes; and
  • Refer to Health Department or Family Planning for any STD Related Testing
  • Follow-up visits are permitted and will include, but are not limited to, the review of test results, inspection of wounds and removal of sutures.



  1. If you are a registered Chatham student for this semester, you will be seen for the above services free of charge. No co-payment is needed for these services.
  2. If the services rendered result in additional health testing and procedures, the student’s health insurance will be charged or the student will be billed accordingly.
  3. If you are utilizing the Urgent Care facility, you, as a student need to provide a valid Chatham ID in order to be rendered the service.
  4. The above services will be the same for the Fall and Spring semesters. During the summer sessions, transportation will be provided by Chatham. However, all visits to the UPMC-Urgent Care facility will be billed to the students’ personal insurance.
  5. The Health Services will coordinate the vaccination clinics (Flu and Tuberculin Purified Protein Derivative (PPD)/Testing for Tuberculosis). Clinic schedules will be announced throughout the academic year.
  6. In case of health/medical emergencies, please contact Chatham Public Safety at (412) 365-1231 or (412) 365-1111.

Greetings from Chatham’s Director of Multicultural Affairs

Greetings Chatham Community,


My name is Dr. Randi Congleton and I am the new Director of Multicultural Affairs. Multicultural Affairs is responsible for leading efforts to build and sustain a diverse and culturally vibrant campus, which promotes multicultural education and student success and retention. Multicultural Affairs supports Chatham University’s educational goals and strategic plan by embracing a social justice and intersectional identity approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Ultimately, we are working towards Chatham University’s goal of “building lives of purpose and fulfilling work” through the development of an active and engaged citizenry.


As I reflect on the last four months here at Chatham and in our country, I am reminded of the urgency that exists to engage across difference, work with campus partners to move equity goals forward, and the necessity of providing a supportive environment for students. My goal is that through one of our many initiatives and touch –points that each of you have an opportunity to learn something new that challenges your own notions and understanding of equity issues in America and abroad.


Multicultural Affairs will continue to support the great programming and initiatives that existed at Chatham while adding high impact practices that move inclusion goals forward. Here are a few of the exciting and engaging events for this fall:

  1. Diversity Dialogues- Diversity Dialogues are monthly lunch and learn style events that allow the Chatham community to come together and discuss current topics related to equity and inclusion. The Kick- Off event for diversity dialogues this year will be “Words Mean Things”: Responsible Use of Social Media. Social Media can be used as a tool for resistance, coping, and engagement across difference. Unfortunately, there are those who utilize social media, music lyrics, and an anonymous internet community to tear down and demean marginalized communities. We will take this opportunity to come together as one community to think about what words truly mean, engage in dialogue related to the power of social media as a change agent, and commit to truly thinking about how our actions online impacts others.
  2. Chatham Hair Expo- Celebrating and centering around natural curly, kinky, and coily hair, the Chatham Hair Expo will feature workshops, product demonstrations, and natural beauty resources focused on the connections between Black women’s health, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and social justice. Workshop Facilitators will include Chatham alumna and local business owners. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Black Student Union. Afterwards, Dr. Tiffany Gill will kick off The Women’s Institute, Women’s Leadership Series by providing a prolific keynote. Dr. Gill is the author of Beauty Shop Politics: African American Women’s Activism in the Beauty Industry (University of Illinois Press, 2010) which was awarded the 2010 Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Prize by the Association of Black Women Historians. The night will end with spoken word and an open mic night sponsored by Student Activities.

Are you a transfer student? A commuter? If so, you’ll want to check out the great events hosted by the Commuter-Transfer Network! The Commuter-Transfer Network connects commuter and transfer students with one another, hosting events throughout the semester.


Here are a few of our exciting events to kick off the semester:

In addition, we are launching an exciting new Mentorship Program, in which current students are paired with incoming students to provide a contact point on campus, as well as someone to attend events with. Internship Program Updates

Participation in an Internship Preparation Workshop is now a requirement for the internship course. Multiple workshops will be offered at the beginning of each semester via my.chatham/Handshake. You only need to attend one workshop, prior to the start of your first internship experience.

Chatham Athletics and Athletics & Fitness Center

Chatham’s brand new weight room is now officially open. The renovations have vastly improved the free weight area including additional squat racks and Olympic lifting platforms. All other weight training machines and cardiovascular equipment were replaced as well.

“We are extremely pleased with the upgrades being made to our facilities. We want to provide for all the students on campus,” Athletic Director Leonard Trevino says, “As a department, we are committed to provide our student-athletes with the best equipment possible. With the addition of so many student-athletes on campus, it was time to redo the space to be able to meet our needs. Chatham as a whole is committed to providing the best possible experience for its students whether it’s in the classroom or on the athletic stage.”

Chatham Athletics would like to thank Webster Fitness for providing the equipment and Marion Morton for painting the mural.


Women’s sports at Chatham include basketball, cross country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track & field, and volleyball. Chatham will add women’s lacrosse beginning play in 2017-2018. Chatham has added five men’s sports competing this academic year: baseball, basketball, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field. Chatham will add two more men’s varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.

Women’s Leadership & Gender Equity Chatham University Women’s Institute

The Women’s Institute works to eradicate social, political, and economic inequalities and to promote women’s leadership and gender equity. The Institute serves as a hub, drawing together the university’s broad range of gender initiatives, resources, and academic programs. Through education, research, and outreach, we work across campus and into the community with our affiliated centers and programs: The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship, The Chatham Women’s Business Center, The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics, and The Women’s & Gender Studies program.

Here are some Fast Facts for students returning to campus:

  • Chatham was just ranked #3 in the country on College Magazine’s Top 10 list of universities for aspiring women leaders!
  • The Women’s Institute is still on the second floor of Braun Hall, at the end of the hallway, but we’ve moved to the right side of the suite. Come visit!
  • The Women’s Leadership Certificate program is open to students in all majors and includes the new Women’s Leadership in the 21st Century Course, offered in the spring.
  • The Women’s Leadership Lecture Series kicks off with the keynote for the Chatham Hair Expo on September 14th, featuring Dr. Tiffany Gill speaking about the history of Black women’s beauty, hair, health, and entrepreneurship as political spaces.
  • The Women’s Leadership Living Learning Community (LLC) is back in Laughlin this year, led by Deondra Benson, Madeleine Gierchak, and Kelly O’Donnell. Join us there for events throughout the year.
  • The popular Just Films Series will launch Season 2 with all new documentaries followed by incredible panel conversations about gender & justice, starting September 13th. Our partners this year are Gwen’s Girls, the Women & Girls Foundation, the Women’s Law Project, and YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.
  • Do you have an idea for a gender-related campus event or action? We love to co-sponsor with student organizations!

The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship

The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University ( creates economic opportunities for women through entrepreneurial education and training, mentoring, and networking. Building on Chatham University’s tradition of educating women for 145 years, The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University has provided quality education and training for women entrepreneurs since 2005.


Prototyping & Design Lab


Join us for “Maker Hour” on Thursdays from 12pm to 1pm starting this Fall at our Center’s new Entrepreneurship Hub at the second floor of Chatham’s Eastside campus! Our first “Maker Hour” will take place on September 7th and continue every week throughout the semester. Pizza and soda will be provided. All undergraduate and graduate students welcome!


During the “Maker Hour”, students will learn about upcoming demos and workshops at our Center’s Design & Prototyping Lab. The Lab will be outfitted with a 3D printer, microcontrollers (such as Arduino and LilyPad), robotics kits, and sewing machines as well as arts and crafts materials and small tools for design and prototyping. Share your business ideas, connect with other students, and get information about entrepreneurial networking opportunities in Pittsburgh. No registration required, but it is encouraged. Mission: “To increase women’s influence and leadership in public life in Pennsylvania and improve the quality of women’s lives by providing them with educational and training opportunities in politics and public policy.”


The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics (PCWP) at Chatham University is a non–partisan center devoted to fostering women’s public leadership through education, empowerment, and action.


We are excited for the upcoming semester and have opportunities for students to get involved with voter registration by signing up to volunteer.


Here is what you can look forward to this fall:


  • Newsday Tuesday: We are launching a new program for students with the Office of Student Affairs to help students keep abreast of current affairs. Join us every other Tuesday from 3:00-4:00pm in the Carriage House starting September 12th. Additional dates include: September 26, October 17, and October 31st.


  • PLEN Seminars in Washington, DC: Learn more about the PLEN (Public Leadership Education Network) by attending one of our informational sessions on September 7th: Noon-1:00pm and 4:00-5:00pm at the Carriage House. PLEN offers a variety of seminars on women and public policy in various fields from STEM, the law, corporate, and global policy.



  • Advocacy Training: On November 4th in the Welker Room of the James Laughlin Music Center. The PCWP is partnering with Project Pericles again to offer our students an advocacy training. This year’s trainers are coming from the Midwest Academy, which has been organizing for social change since 1973. Learn how to develop and implement strategies for issue campaigns.

The Bonner Leaders program is a nationally recognized service leadership program that provides students with the opportunity to create meaningful impact on the local community during their time at Chatham.  Students serve at a local non-profit for the duration of their undergraduate experience at Chatham.  While in the program, students earn their federal work study money. Applications are distributed in the spring so that incoming and returning students can be accepted during the summer and start at the beginning of the academic year. The opening for returning students is August 26th.  Early arrivals are not allowed unless you are a member of an organization or sports team that is required to return early. There are MANDATORY Residence Hall meetings on SUNDAY, AUGUST 27th beginning at 1:15 p.m. in your residence halls and the All Residence Hall meeting at 2:15 p.m. in the AFC.  Everyone is expected to attend for important announcements and information!  After the All Residence Hall meeting, students will proceed to Class Meetings and Opening Convocation!

  • Class Meeting (3:15 p.m., AFC): Join your class to kickoff the year! Start planning class activities and/or plotting for Battle of the Classes.  Wear your class t-shirt or receive a new one at the meeting for your official class photo!

Spanning 23,000 square feet and two floors, The Zone, as the Esther Barazzone Center has been nicked named, is a multipurpose campus hub that has been designed to exceed LEED Platinum standards and serves as the dining hall and main gathering space for campus events. Come see all that Eden Hall has to offer and be on the lookout for activities taking place on the Eden Hall Campus.


Carriage House

The Carriage House is your student center and serves as the “living room” of Chatham University. If you are looking for a place to relax, study or just hang-out, the Carriage House is your destination. Join us for fun events throughout the year which include our Carriage House Fun Days, Comedy & Trivia Nights, TV viewing parties and more!

Hope that you all had a wonderful summer.  We have had a very busy summer getting ready for the new school year and wanted to reach out with some new updates for the fall.


Important Dates to remember:

Meal Plans Start: Friday, August 25 at breakfast

Meal Exchange Starts: Monday, August 28 – the first day of classes

Sunday, August 27 – Dinner – Anderson is closed.  Dinner will be after the Opening Convocation in the AFC to celebrate the Year of Indonesia! – Please remember to bring your Chatham ID if you have a meal plan.

Tuesday, August 29 – Lunch – Anderson is closed.  Community Day Picnic at the Quad.  Please remember to bring your Chatham ID if you have a meal plan, cash, or credit card can be used in Cafe Rachel.  Anderson will re-open at 2:00pm.  (Inclement Weather Site: Anderson)

  • We will be rolling out a new catering guide as well as an online catering ordering system soon – please look for a follow-up email early in the semester
  • Voucher Requests:  continue to email me and copy our office manager: Sharen Logesky – we also now require a business purpose for the voucher when you submit your request, in order for the business office to process.
  • Reminder – you can use your student meal plan, flex, and cougar dollars at all 3 campuses


Shadyside Updates:

  • We continue to support Chatham’s sustainability initiatives by offering pre and post-consumer composting in Anderson.  We are also planning on featuring more of Eden Hall’s produce in Anderson, as well as the Carriage House (more info below).  We’ve added some local specialty purveyors to our supplier list and will feature events for sampling.  All of our on-the-go! packaging remains compostable at each of our locations.  We will be offering the green re-usable boxes again (more info below).
  • Anderson – due to the increase in student enrollment, we need to begin tracking counts.  Therefore, we ask that everyone, whether you are dining in Anderson or not, provide their Chatham ID to enter.  If you are not dining, please notify our cashiers before giving your card, so we can account for you in our system.
  • Anderson Green Boxes – every student that has a meal plan may request a green box.  You must do the initial request for the box at Anderson.  Once you receive your “free” box, you must either turn in a box and collect a clean one or a 2017-2018 green box card, or turn in a 2017-2018 green box card to collect a clean box.  If you do not have a box or a card, and already received your first free box, the charge is $5.00 for a new one.  (With the receipt and the return of a box, the $5.00 will be returned to you.) Everyone who does not have a meal plan – the price of the box is $5.00.
  • Anderson – all of our V2 entrees are now vegan – or will be served vegan with dairy options on the side.
  • Carriage House – Again, due to the increase in student enrollment, we are expanding services in the Carriage House for lunch hours only.  We hope to eventually make this a permanent station where we can better feature Eden Hall and more local foods, but for the Fall Semester, we plan on offering two gourmet sandwiches every lunch – one vegetarian, one with protein – that can be a panini pressed sandwich.  You will be able to choose a side and a dispenser drink to complete your meal.



  • For the fall, we will be extending our hours due to night classes being offered.  We will be open Mon-Thurs until at least 7:00pm.  We will have the deli, salad bar, and on-the-go! items available!  Remember, you can use your meal plan!

Let us help you manage your student account along with the help of Director of Student Accounts, Julie Bechtold!


View all daily transactions for your student account online by accessing the CampusVue Student Portal at and selecting the Portal tab on the upper right-hand side of the page. Log in using the Student Portal Homepage. Select the “My Student Account” tab to make a payment or view your account online. To see a specific term use the “Registration “Bill” tab.


Located on the first floor of Braun Hall, the Office of Student Accounts is available to serve you from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This office is responsible for overseeing the billing and collection of tuition, room, board, fees, and other university related charges.

Staffing Changes

The JKM Library said farewell to Amy Lee Heinlen, Access Services Librarian, in February when she moved on to Duquesne University for an exciting new position. Kate Wenger, formerly the JKM Library’s Reference Librarian, is now the Head of Access Services. We are also excited to introduce you to our new Reference and Outreach Librarian, Jocelyn Codner, who joins us on August 14th.


New Resources

Over the summer, the JKM Library transitioned to a new library system called Koha. While we hope the transition will be seamless for you, but there are a few changes. When you search our catalog, you will notice it looks a bit different! In addition, we now check out DVDs and CDs for 14 days with one 14-day renewal. If you run into any issues with the new system or any other library resources, please don’t hesitate to ask us!


We also recently added a new database,, which provides access to 50 streaming psychology videos. This database replaces Counseling and Therapy in Video.

As a refresher, here are some services that the PACE Center provides:


Tutoring services are provided free of charge and available for most courses at Chatham University. Just drop by the PACE Center or log on to your my.chatham account and fill out the “Request for Tutoring” form on my documents & forms. Supplemental Instruction is available for the more challenging courses including Biology and Chemistry. The instructors of these courses will make sure you have the information regarding times and locations of the Supplemental Instruction sessions.


If you are in need of writing support, stop by to sign up with a graduate writing mentor or with Kathy Perrone, our Writing Specialist. They will work with you on any stage of your writing – from brainstorming a topic to editing a final paper.


Facing some difficult academic issues such as managing your time or issues with procrastination? Stop by and make an appointment to meet with Barb, our academic counselor. She will teach you strategies for adjusting your study skills to meet college demands.

Many exciting structural changes have been happening on-campus. Residence Life is now with Student Activities in the Carriage House. Also, Multicultural Affairs has joined Student Affairs in the 1st floor of Woodland Hall. If you’re looking for vocational advice, Career Development has transitioned to the Basement level of JKM Library, and Dilworth is now a new residence hall on campus. For graduate students, the graduate psychology programs have moved over to Eastside campus, joining Health Sciences. Please see the maps provided below for your guidance.
