Music For Food
The many that attended the recital ‘ Music For Food’ not only found joy in donating to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, but also the art, music and refreshments. The sounds of Violin & Piano featuring works by Paul Juon and Aram Khachaturian, performed by none other than Jennifer Orchard (violin) and Igor Kraevsky (piano), were amazing. If you missed it, don’t fret! There is always time to donate and make your mark in the Greater Pittsburgh Community by donating to The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank! Thanks for all those donating and attending. The art was a sight for sore eyes, and the music a symphony to the ears.

Friday Afternoon Musicale: Virtuosity and Sensitivity
Menghua Lin graced Chatham with her musical talent on September 21st at one of Chathams’ traditional friday musicales.
This performance featured Lowell Liebermann’s Nocturne No. 4, Op. 38, Tyzen Hsiao’s Farewell Etude Op. 55, Frederic Chopin’s Scherzo No. 4, Op. 54, and Robert Schumann’s Humoreske Op. 20. A native of Taiwan, Dr. Lin has performed worldwide in Asia, Europe, and the United States of America, appearing as recitalist and soloist at various festivals. Formerly, Dr. Lin was piano faculty at the Pre-College Division at Carnegie Mellon University and currently is piano faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp as well as serving as board member at Fortnightly Music Club. She recently made her solo debut, in the summer of 2018, at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan!
An Afternoon of Chamber Music
The Chatham community was gifted with an afternoon of Chamber Music by Brahms and Dvořák, featuring Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25. Guest artists featured Yeeha Chiu, piano, with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra: Carolyn Edwards, violin, Si Yu, viola, and Alexandra Thompson, cello.
Yeeha Chiu, (Major Artist, 1977) Hong-Kong-born pianist, studied with Ilona Kabos, Nadia Reisenberg, and Sheila Paige. A graduate of the Royal College of Music and the Juilliard School, she has taught at Juilliard and Duquesne University. Ms. Chiu has performed twice with the London Philharmonic, with Anatole Fistoulari and Sir Malcolm Sargent, and the Vienna Symphony under Christoph Eschenbach. She has appeared as concerto soloist and in recitals throughout Asia and the United States, and is the pianist of the violin-piano Duo Grishman-Chiu and the New England Piano Trio. Ms. Chiu is on the celebrated roster of Steinway Artists.
Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas, Part IX
Pianist, conductor, and Chatham faculty member, Walter Morales, continued his presentation of Beethoven’s Complete Piano Sonatas cycle. This performance featured Op. 2, No. 2 in A major and Op. 31, No. 1 in G major.
A native of Costa Rica, Walter Morales is the Music Director of the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra. His previous positions include Music Director of Undercroft Opera, Music Director of the Carnegie Mellon University Contemporary Ensemble, Head of Music of Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic, Assistant Director of Orchestral Studies at Carnegie Mellon University and Assistant Conductor of the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic.
An Afternoon in Vienna
Nanette Kaplan Solomon took guests on a musical trip to Vienna, featuring works by Haydn, Schubert, and Schumann. Nanette Kaplan Solomon, pianist and Professor Emerita of Music at Slippery Rock University, performs frequently as soloist and chamber musician. Dr. Solomon’s numerous awards include winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society auditions, winner of the French Embassy award from the French Piano Institute, a fellowship to the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, semi-finalist in the University of Maryland International competition, and finalist in “Search for a Star” sponsored by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Marvin Hamlisch. She is a founding member of the Slippery Rock Piano Trio, as well as the Kaplan Duo, with her sister , pianist Iris Kaplan Rosenthal. Chatham University Music Program and Alia Musica Pittsburgh were pleased to welcome guitarist Kenneth Meyer, who performed works for solo guitar from his new album “Draw the strings tight.” He was joined in performance by Pittsburgh-based composer Federico Garcia-De Castro.
Music on the Edge
Chatham University Music Program presented ‘Music on the Edge’, featuring soprano Christine Brandes and composer-pianist Eric Moe. Brandes and Moe join forces to perform Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis, Schönberg’s Book of the Hanging Garden, Barbara White’s I hear a clear stream singing, beneath these frozen tears, and some of Moe’s own vocal compositions.

Music for Food featuring Catherine Cho and Tina Faigen
James Laughlin Music Hall was treated to an afternoon of chamber music featuring works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Fauré, Phillips, and Schultz. The performance featured Catherine Cho, violin (The Juilliard School faculty) and Tina Faigen, piano (University of Pittsburgh faculty).
We are pleased to announce that the concert raised almost 2,000 dollars for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
