Apply for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, sponsored by the US Department of State,  is a funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. Many of the language programs require no previous language study. Applicants must be US citizens and enrolled in a degree granting program at the time of application.  The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
