Management Information Systems (MIS) Major

In Fall 2015, Chatham University’s Business and Entrepreneurship Department launched the new Management Information Systems major.  The demand for professionals with expertise in Management Information Systems is surging in a variety of MIS career paths. MIS degrees prepare students to manage data systems and related facilities for processing internal business information; select systems and train personnel; and respond to external data requests.  Since its introduction, the MIS degree has become popular not only as a major, but also as a minor, effectively pairing with Accounting, Marketing, Math, and Social Work majors. Students see the value of digital literacy in all fields of study.
The MIS major prepares students to become critical thinkers and innovative designers of contemporary information systems in organizational settings. MIS students develop both conceptual knowledge and hands-on skills in computing, relational databases, and web design. They will become competent in recognizing opportunities to improve business processes or areas, communicate with stakeholders, and implement and manage information systems projects.

The degree includes instruction in cost and accounting information systems, management control systems, personnel information systems, data storage and security, business systeBusEntms networking, systems analysis and design, e-commerce, digital marketing, and management information systems policy and planning. Students’ developing expertise in management information systems complements a rigorous foundation in business education. The courses range from Systems Analysis and Design to Information Security to  Entrepreneurial Ventures for this major.

Dr. Tingting (Rachel) Chung, Director of Business Program, said “From Hollywood to healthcare to the presidential administration, every major organization is being transformed by Big Data, business analytics, and the Internet of Things. If you are creative and visionary, an MIS education will make you a leader in solving the toughest problems across industries.”

There are multiple career paths for students who earn a degree in management information systems, and it is consistently ranked among career areas with opportunities for growth. Job titles held by individuals with this background include business analyst, medical informatics analyst, search analyst, information security manager, internet technology strategist, data scientist, e-commerce analyst, IT auditor, director of systems development, chief security officer, and chief information officer.

Management information system professionals work in a huge variety of industries and work environments, including finance, IT, marketing, non-profits/NGOs, and government. They are needed in all kinds of companies, all over the world. This major empowers students to further their education in graduate school programs in business, information systems, and other areas.
