Black History Month: Fiction Writers

IMG_3800The month of February honors Black History. For 2013 the Library has created a display that highlights black fiction writers. A range of writers are featured including trailblazers Ralph Ellison and Octavia Butler, luminaries  Alice Walker and Maya Angelou, and poets Gwendolyn Brooks and Nikki Giovanni.  With such prominent and talented authors featured it may be difficult to narrow your choices down to one or two! So anthologies and collections of short stories are also on display.

Also featured are children’s books, two illustrated by the amazing Kadir Nelson, one authored by Ntozake Shange.  They beautifully show the intersection of art, poetry, and history- you don’t have to be a child to be drawn to these books.

The voices of the African-American community can be heard today like never before.  Reading these stories show the struggles and triumphs of a people, rich and varied and complex. Come share in the experience with some of America’s best writers.
