Fulbright US Student Program 2022-23 Grant Competition Timeline

Are you interested in applying for a Fulbright US Student Program grant for the 2022-2023 competition?

The below checklist/timeline lists the national application deadline, October 12, 2021, 5 pm ET. Submission by the campus deadline, September 14, 2021, allows Chatham’s fellowship committee to provide applicants with feedback and applicants time to make final edits prior to the national deadline. There are suggested optional tasks to complete and check-ins throughout the summer to help applicants develop and organize required components of the application.

IIE has scheduled many webinars, panels and office hour sessions in the coming weeks and months on a variety of topics related to the Fulbright grants and the application process. Applicants can register for upcoming sessions and view past events here.  Please be sure to also review the resources at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/  and particularly the Getting Started tab which can answer many applicant questions.

Suggested tasks / deadlines:

March 31, 2021:

Online application opens.  View awards by clicking on specific countries at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/countries or use “Award Search” at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/

April-May 2021:

      • Thoroughly read Fulbright website and view tutorials at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/about/videos-tutorials . Participate in live webinars and/or view recorded sessions at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/information-sessions
      • Review differences between ETA (English Teaching Assistant) grants and Research/Study grants
      • Research your country and Fulbright commission (either grant). Carefully consider the profile of countries. Keep up with current events in the country.
      • Research your topic if you are applying for a Research grant; discuss your research topic with your academic advisor and department for ideas and input.
      • Begin networking and start looking for affiliations (names and universities) if you are applying for a Research grant. Make initial outreach to university/organization abroad. If you are unsure about how to approach universities, request assistance from your academic advisor, department and/or Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA)
      • Work on your language proficiency (register for summer classes and/or self-study)
      • Look for opportunities to strengthen your candidacy. Examples: volunteer, academic tutor, language partner for the English Language Program, participate in related research.
      • Be in touch with FPA to schedule advising appointments.

Summer 2021

      • Update your CV/resume
      • Start drafting statements for application
      • Fill out your personal details on the application
      • If needed, start looking for language reference writers; continue language study
      • Think about your recommenders and reach out to them.
      • Follow up contact with the university abroad as necessary, secure affiliation letter
      • Request university/college transcripts (unofficial is okay) from all schools attended in US and abroad
      • Share first drafts of your essays with FPA by July 16 (or earlier)

August 16, 2021, Deadline to share revised draft statements with FPA /Fellowship committee for feedback before campus deadline

September 14, 2021, Campus Deadline.  You must submit final drafts of your statements at this time and list your recommenders, language, etc.

September 20-24, 2021 Virtual and or on-campus interviews with Fellowship committee. (exact days/times TBD). Campus committee evaluation completed.  (FPA uploads form to Slate platform).

Applicants will be able to make additional revisions to application post-interview.

October 12, 2021, 5 pm EST.  Online application system closes at 5:00 P.M. EST.

Late January 2022. Semi-finalists announced.

March-June 2022. Fulbright finalists announced by country.

Apply for Scholarships for International Experiences!

Are you a Chatham student looking to fund your future study or internship abroad in-person or virtual experiences?  We can help! See scholarship opportunities with upcoming deadlines below.

Gilman International Scholarship – Pell grant recipients can apply for funding toward in-person or virtual study abroad and receive up to $5,000 (or $8,000 if you’re studying a Critical Need Language) to go abroad. The March 9, 2021 deadline application is open for applicants whose in-person or virtual programs start between May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022 (Summer 2021, Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 programs).

Freeman-Asia Awards provide need-based funding to assist students studying in East or Southeast Asia with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.  Check your eligibility and application instructions. Applications due March 30, 2021.

Bridging Scholarship – The Bridging Project is accepting applications from American students who will participate in study-abroad programs in Japan beginning Fall 2021. The deadline for receipt of applications is April 16, 2021. Funding from private foundations, corporations, and individuals has made it possible to award scholarships for travel and living expenses while studying abroad in Japan beginning in August-October of 2021. Bridging Scholarship recipients will receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on single-semester programs), or either $4,000 or $4,500 (for students on full-year programs).

Inclusive Ireland Scholarships 2021 – Sponsored by Education in Ireland,  these scholarships will offer €3000 scholarships to study for a semester at one of 14 Irish institutions. In order to be considered for the scholarship, you must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university in the United States; identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color); intend to study abroad at one of the participating colleges or universities in Ireland during the Fall 2021 term; and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. The application will close on April 1st, 2021, at 11:59 PM PST. The application requires contact information and two essay questions.

Fund for Education Abroad supports  US citizen or permanent resident undergraduate students who are underrepresented in study abroad. The application will open July 1, 2021 at 12pm EST for Spring 2022 study abroad programs.

There are several experiential learning scholarships offered by Chatham for summer study abroad.  These include the Glenda Rich DeBroff Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Sally Mercke Heym Award for Cross Cultural Understanding, the Lorin Maazel- Rachel Carson Award for Environmental Field Studies and the Theo Colburn-Rachel Carson Endowed Scholarship for Environmental Field Studies. The application deadline for summer experiential learning scholarships is February 28, 2021.

Two Chatham scholarships are offered to Chatham undergraduates for participation in semester study abroad programs:

IFSA Scholarship— Scholarships of up to $4250 to study abroad for semester in Cyprus (Nicosia), Thailand (Mahidol) or Costa Rica (Veritas).  The deadline to apply for a IFSA Scholarship for Fall 2021 study abroad is March 15, 2021.

Benter Scholarship – Scholarships of up to $5000 to study abroad for semester at any Chatham exchange or partner institution. The deadline to apply for a Benter Scholarship for Fall 2021 study abroad is March 15, 2021.

Additionally, study abroad vouchers ($1200) and  International Studies Certificate vouchers ($1800) can be applied toward in-person or virtual credit bearing experiences abroad.

The Summer, Fall, and Academic Year 2021-2022 Application is open! Deadline is January 20, 2021 at 12pm (noon) EST

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in deserving U.S. undergraduates who are least likely to study abroad. More than 100 volunteer reviewers read applications each cycle. In partnership with them, FEA considers financial need, demographic factors, and academic plan and preparedness to decide scholarship recipients.

Financial Need is determined by the FEA Financial Aid Form we provide when you begin an application.

Demographic Factors that are considered include minority background, first-generation college student status, and community college experience.

Academic Plan and Preparedness is determined by your essays, unofficial transcript, and letter of recommendation.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for an FEA scholarship, you must be:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)
  • Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution
  • Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries

What you’ll need

  1. Complete the application form online
  2. Print the Financial Aid Form and bring it to your university’s financial aid office. Someone from that office should complete the form and give it back to you for your to upload to your online application.
  3. Upload your unofficial transcript to your online application.
  4. Submit the name and email of your recommender. After your recommender submits your letter of recommendation, you must go back into the application to click submit.
  5. Make sure ALL application materials are uploaded and submitted before the deadline to be considered for an FEA scholarship.

Apply for full scholarship to study abroad in summer 2021!

Ready to change the world? Apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a full scholarship to study abroad with a cohort of student leaders from around the country.

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was founded to empower students of color with a transformative experience abroad, much like Frederick Douglass was inspired by his travels. All program fees are covered, as well as airfare.

This year’s cohort is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Douglass’s four-month journey around Ireland. You’ll be based in Dublin and visit other cities where Douglass campaigned, while meeting with government leaders and social justice activists.

The application is open to first-, second- and third-year students who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and are from ethnic backgrounds typically underrepresented on study abroad programs.

This opportunity is offered by CIEE, a student exchange organization whom Chatham partners with. As a next step, start your application at www.CIEE.ORG/FDGF. All eligible students who submit an application also qualify for a $1,500 scholarship towards any CIEE summer program.

Scholarship opportunities for international experiences!

Looking for a funded experience abroad or for funding towards an international experience? Check out these opportunities with deadlines approaching!

Gilman International Scholarship, deadline October 6, 11:59 PM, PT. The Gilman International Scholarship is a program of the US Department of State for US citizens who are Federal Pell Grant recipients to enable them to study or intern abroad. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for participation in in-person or virtual international programs. This cycle is for in person or virtual programs that are at least 21 days in length, with a start date between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021.

Vira I. Heinz (VIH) Program for Women in Global Leadership, deadline November 1 at 4:00 PM ET . The VIH program prepares scholars for tomorrow’s global challenges by offering a unique opportunity for international experiences, leadership development, and community service. Three first-time woman travelers from each member institution, including Chatham, are admitted into the program and receive a scholarship of at least $5,000 to put toward the cost of an international experience of their choosing.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), deadline November 17, 8:00 PM ET. CLS, a program of the US Department of State, is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program is fully funded and includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

Fulbright Canada Internship program

The application is now open for the Fulbright Canada- Mitacs Globalink internship program that will allow exceptional U.S. undergraduate students to do an internship in Canada during the 2021 summer semester.

 

This program will provide high performing students with the opportunity to be part of a 10 to 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

The application deadline is Sept 30 2020.

 Fulbright Canada – Mitacs Globalink program

 

Program Summary

  1. U.S. students will come to Canada to undertake advanced research projects.
  2. Projects will cover a broad cross-section of research topics including most academic disciplines.
  3. Students will spend 10 to 12 weeks (May – October) in Canada on a research project in their area of interest.
  4. Students will be placed at a Canadian university and undertake a supervised research project.
  5. Students will have extensive opportunities for cultural, social, and recreational experiences.

 

Eligibility

Participants in this program must:

 

  1. be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited university located in the United States ;
  2. be a United States citizen, and hold a valid U.S. passport;
  3. have at least one semester remaining in their program of study as of Fall 2021 (this program is not suitable for 1st-year NOR last year students);
  4.    ideal candidates will be in their third year in the 20/21 academic year;
  5. have a competitive grade point average;
  6. be available to spend between 10 to 12 weeks in Canada between May and August;
  7. apply by September 30, 2020 at 10 PM EST

 

Benefits

 

Students who participate in this program will have:

 

  1. access to the prestigious worldwide Fulbright network (the Globalink program will not impact the eligibility to apply for Fulbright Student programs);
  2. access to some of Canada’s top research facilities;
  3. the opportunity to gain valuable international experience;
  4. a rewarding experience combining academic research, professional skills, and personal growth; and,
  5. a grant in the amount of CAD$7800

To apply, students must provide:

 

  1. a completed application online form;
  2.     unofficial transcripts from their home university or college;
  3. a two-page Curriculum Vitae (CV);

  5. a one-page personal statement- no final project needs to be identified at this time.

 

The program is highly competitive. Students will be evaluated on a combination of factors including:

  • their current skills and interests
  • fit to program
  • letters of recommendation

In the past, I never thought that I could go to the US for an overseas education, but Chatham University gave me a great chance through the English Language Program International Student Ambassador Scholarship. During the 10 weeks at Chatham University, I learned a lot of things. Through the English Language Program at Chatham, you are cannot only improve your English language skill, but also explore US culture and form new relationships with other international students. I have changed a lot, from a person who is always shy to speak English to a confident communicator, from a family-dependent to independent person, and from a passive to now a more lively person. All of these changes occurred during my three months in the U.S. To me, Chatham is not only the university to study, but also the place to discover myself and the environment to grow.

At Chatham University, you will be able to receive full support from enthusiastic teachers, experience well-designed learning programs, and  interact with amazing friends, and study in a place where you always feel comfortable like a second family.

Những giảng viên tâm huyết, những người bạn quốc tế tài năng, những bài giảng thực tế, môi trường học chủ động, khuôn viên trường cổ kính và còn vô vàn những điều thú vị khác bạn sẽ có thể khám phá tại Chatham.

Welcome back for fall 2019!

Benter Scholarship – Up to nine scholarships of up to $5000 to study abroad for semester at any Chatham exchange or partner institution.

Vira I Heinz Scholarship for Women in Global Leadership. Three scholarships of $5000+ for undergraduate women to study abroad during summer 2020. Application due 11/1/2019.

Outside study abroad scholarships are available, including Gilman for Pell grant recipients, and FEA which supports underrepresented students to study abroad.

The 2020-2021 Fulbright US Student Competition is open.

Grants are offered for rising seniors and recent graduates to teach English abroad, pursue independent research or study in a graduate degree program. Chatham’s on campus deadline is September 10, 2019 and the national deadline to submit an application is October 8, 2019, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
