Save the Reefs

Over time, people have become increasingly concerned for our environment, not only on land but also at sea. Coral reefs are an important part of marine biology, as they provide a home for a large amount of marine life. They also are used by people for commercial purposes, as they are seen as supports for fisheries. The problem is, people have strayed away from using coral reefs because of the environmental crisis, which has caused more of a burden on coral reefs.

As a substitute, people use seagrass meadows as a means for fisheries, but these have their own issues too. Seagrass meadows have depreciated because of certain water issues and human disturbance over time, but scientists still have faith that seagrass meadows can help support our aquatic ecosystems. Seagrass meadows are important to the environment and people as well because of their ability to support fisheries globally, be important in global carbon cycle, and being bio-filters in the coastal eco-system.

As coral reefs and seagrass meadows continue to suffer because of climate issues, our aquatic environment will continue to face the negative consequences. Our government must continue to find ways to conserve these vital parts of our ecosystem to avoid any more drastic changes. We also need to play our part and help prevent this issue from becoming worse by avoiding pollution in our seas and supporting conservation efforts to improve marine life.

Thank you for bringing this to light. Because coral reefs are not as visible to us because they are below the sea level, I feel like they are easily forgotten about compared to animals or areas like glaciers that can be easily seen.

This is pretty much out of site, out of mind. We don’t worry about things that aren’t right in front of us. This brought that into light.
