Travel with Fulbright!

Are you a Chatham junior, senior, graduate student, or alum interested in a funded opportunity abroad?

Consider applying for the Fulbright US Student Program!

What is the Fulbright Program?

The Fulbright US Student Program funds one year of English teaching assistantship, research, or graduate study abroad. The application for grants for 2023-24 is open now with a deadline of October 12, 2022.

Where Can I Go With a Fulbright?

Applicants will select a grant opportunity in a country in East Asia, Europe and Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, South and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Western Hemisphere. Programs may differ in competitiveness based on the number of applicants to a specific grant opportunity.  For more information on individual programs visit the “countries” section of the Fulbright site. Grants are available to conduct research, study in a graduate program, or teach English.

Research grants

Fulbright applicants for research grants design their own projects,  usually alongside advisors at universities abroad or other institutes of higher education. The requirements vary by country and more information can be found on the country information pages. There are also field-specific award opportunitities. Creative and performing arts applicants are encouraged, with supplementary portfolios required based on their disciplines.

Study grants

Applicants may apply to study in a degree program through an Open Study/Research grant. Each country’s information page will indicate if that country accepts applications for graduate enrollment. Several countries offer named Graduate Degree Grants to specific graduate programs or institutions.

Teaching grants

The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for ETA Programs can apply to only one country.

Eligibility

Applicants must be United States citizens with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent prior to the start of their grant, meaning that students who are seniors, graduate students, or alums at the time of application are eligible to apply. For more information see the eligibility section of the Fulbright website.

While applying for Fulbright can be a long process, Chatham University has resources available to help you strengthen your application.

  • Karin Chipman in the Office of International Affairs is Chatham’s Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA). She is available throughout the application process and has experience helping students in the Fulbright process. Applicants can click here to set up an appointment or reach her by email.
  • Academic Advisors: Your academic advisor and professors are helpful resources for the review of your application. Your application will be strengthened with feedback from multiple perspectives.
  • The Writing Center: The Office of Academic & Accessibility Resources (OAAR) includes a Writing Center. Fulbright applicants are encouraged to meet with the Writing Center when writing and revising their applications. Use the OAAR scheduler to make an appointment.
  • Fulbright Alumni Ambassadors: Applicants may visit the Fulbright Alumni Ambassadors page to read about and connect with a diverse group of individuals who have completed their Fulbright grants. The Fulbright Grantee Directory can also be useful to identify returnees who may have similar research, study, or teaching experiences that may relate to an applicant’s proposal.
  • Fulbright webinars, videos, and tutorials: The Fulbright program has a variety of helpful live and recorded resources on its website, including grant and location-specific sessions as well as office hours.

Global Focus – Costa Rican Music Playlist

Chatham’s Global Focus program seeks to instill global competence in Chatham students by leading a campus-wide initiative focused on a specific country or region of the world over the course of an academic year through curriculum, films, lectures, performances, and cuisine.

The program also promotes cross-cultural understanding by forging connections with off-campus international initiatives in the greater Pittsburgh area and beyond. 2021-22 is the Year of Costa Rica.

Please enjoy the following playlist from Professor Walter Morales, Coach Accompanist for the Ruud Scholars at Chatham University and Music Director of the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra.

“As part of my musicological research and work as an advocate of Costa Rican composers, I have created a YouTube Playlist that features my performances as concert pianist and orchestral conductor of Costa Rican Music around the world.  You will find piano music written in the 19th and 20th Century, as well as works by contemporary composers writing for a new generation of performers.

I updated the playlist to open with an excerpt from a faculty voice recital recorded here at Chatham University in 2015, featuring Dr. Kelly Lynch and Prof. Walter Morales.  This video is followed by three Costa Rican Nocturnes recorded in the Welker Room just a few weeks ago as a part of a virtual recital featuring Costa Rican pianists from around the world.”

Important Update to Chatham’s Travel Approval Policy

An update to Chatham’s Travel Approval Policy now makes some travel to USDOS Level 3 and 4 locations approvable beginning with summer 2022 programs.

Please review the below policy carefully and reach out with any questions about how this may affect you and your program choice or a pending application. If you had previously delayed making plans it is not too late to apply for many summer and fall programs abroad.

Updated Travel Approval Policy 03.03.22

In line with peer institutions and in response to recent changes in Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for COVID-19 mitigation, beginning with summer 2022, Chatham’s Travel Approval Policy has been updated.

Chatham’s Travel Approval Policy covers any travel for which a student is receiving academic credit for their activity abroad (coursework, internship, fieldwork, research, etc.). The policy states that students will be approved for travel to locations that have a US Department of State (USDOS) Travel Advisory of Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions or Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Applications to travel to locations that are Level 3: Reconsider Travel or Level 4: Do Not Travel for COVID-19 only will be reviewed and may be approved on a case by case basis. The designation for Health Risk (H) and information on COVID-19 risk will be stated at the top of a location’s Travel Advisory, along with any other risk factors. Locations that include any other risk factor (except Health for COVID-19 only) of Level 3: Reconsider Travel or Level 4: Do Not Travel will not be approved. Students should review the USDOS Travel Advisory Level of their travel location and contact the Office of International Affairs with any questions.

Students approved to travel to a Level 3: Reconsider Travel or Level 4: Do Not Travel location will be required to 1) sign an Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Related to the Level 3 or Level 4 Travel Advisory and 2) to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19; boosters are highly recommended and may be required for entry into certain countries. It is each student’s responsibility to monitor and be aware of entry requirements, including vaccine documentation, mandatory quarantine, testing, masking or any other restriction as detailed by country and local authorities.

Please note that US DOS Advisory Levels change often – please check the USDOS Travel Advisory listing regularly for any updates.

Students may apply to programs abroad that include other risk factors as designated on the USDOS Travel Advisory, including in Level 3 and Level 4 locations and be conditionally approved by Chatham, however, if the location’s Travel Advisory Level does not exclude Level 3 or Level 4 risk factors other than Health for COVID-19 by 60 days prior to the program start date, they will not be approved. It is not recommended that students make nonrefundable deposits or plans that cannot be changed until fully approved by Chatham.

As of today, some countries that could be approved under the updated policy include: Japan, Germany, Greece, France, Costa Rica, Brazil, Spain, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy. United Kingdom, Jordan, Morocco, Argentina, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia. These countries are Level 3 or Level 4 for Health (H) and may have other risk factors that do not exceed Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). Please review the USDOS Travel Advisories to check other locations and to confirm advisory levels and risk factors.

Please contact internationalaffairs@chatham.edu with any questions.

Travel updates! Updated as of December 16, 2021. (please read)

Be cautious traveling- both within the United States, and internationally:

At this time, we recommend students limit all non-essential travel, especially if you are not fully vaccinated. If you do need to travel, either internationally or out of Pennsylvania, you are responsible for following local, state, and national guidance. You may have to quarantine, or test for covid-19 before or after travel.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, travel guidance can change frequently, and students should follow-up with their travel agents, airlines, and the country resources for where they travel.

Refer to guidance from the CDC, US State Department travel advisories and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for specific port-of-entry screening processes, as well as any travel restrictions.

Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID-19 variants.

Recently the US government updated their travel policies for entry to the United States, and recommendations for covid-19 testing and quarantine.

All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens and fully vaccinated people, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 1 day before travel or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months before they board a flight to the United States.

Effective November 8, 2021, all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers* to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated for covid-19 and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to the United States.

The CDC has also updated their recommendations, and those who are fully-vaccinated will not need to quarantine upon entry to the United States. It is recommended that international travelers take a covid-19 test 3-5 days after arrival in the United States.

If you are not-fully vaccinated, and are eligible for an exception to enter the United States, you will be required to quarantine for at least 7-days.

Chatham University follows CDC guidance, which includes:

Spring Entry Testing

In alignment with CDC guidance, Chatham will require spring entry term testing for any student or employee (vaccinated or unvaccinated) traveling internationally before coming to campus on 1.3.

If you are traveling internationally over the winter break, please contact Student Health Services to discuss and schedule your spring entry testing prior to coming to campus or on 1.3 or 1.4.

Please remember that Spring 2022 semester begins on January 5, 2022. If you travel internationally or domestically, please be aware of when you need to return for classes.

Covid-19 Testing resources when departing the United States

You may need a negative covid-19 test in order to engage in international travel. A map of local testing locations is available on the Allegheny County’s website. You should plan testing carefully to make sure you meet any travel requirements to board your flight or enter the destination country. Please check with your travel agent, or the consular operations of your destination country for specific requirements.

Some testing locations may offer free testing, others may charge you. We recommend checking the location for their requirements. You can receive a covid-19 test at many local pharmacies, doctors’ offices, or testing sites.

The Curative van travels around the county weekly offering testing. The van schedule is updated every Monday for the week:

If you do not have a signature, or the one you have is more than a year old, please contact OIA to set up an appointment for a travel signature. Be aware of our upcoming office closure!
