Chatham University’s Business & Entrepreneurship Department is pleased to welcome Michael D. Sherwin, M.S., MBA, as the newest addition to the department’s adjunct faculty. Professor Sherwin will be teaching Logistics and Operations (BUS 413/513) in the Fall 2016 semester.
For background, Professor Sherwin holds a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Penn State University, and most recently earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon. His past career experience includes positions at the Director, Manager, and technical contributor levels of both Fortune 500 companies as well as start-up organizations. These positions have provided Professor Sherwin with extensive experience in the biotechnology, aerospace, defense, energy, plastics, adhesives, electronics, tooling, and high purity metal powder industries.
Currently, Sherwin serves as the Senior Manager of Quality Assurance – Supplier Quality Excellence at Curtiss Wright in Cheswick, Pennsylvania. He has worked with Curtiss Wright in various managerial capacities since 2011, and is currently responsible for implementing risk-based preventive measures and processes within the commercial nuclear and defense industry supply bases. In addition to his work at Curtiss-Wright and new position at Chatham, Professor Sherwin is also a part-time faculty member at Robert Morris University, where he has taught two courses: Introduction to Quality Engineering (ENGR 3680) and Optimization Techniques in Industrial Engineering (ENGR 3900).
Alongside teaching, Sherwin is furthering his own education by pursuing his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Mississippi State University. Here, his research focuses on reliability analytics and risk mitigation in supply chains. These extensive career and schooling experiences influence Professor Sherwin’s teaching approach: “I’m looking forward to the opportunity of sharing my industry experiences with students as well as learning from them,” says Sherwin. “Through my own experiences as a student, I’ve found that learning the theory of operations provides a great foundation upon which to build. However, a true understanding of the subject is only achieved when theory is joined by practice and real-world experiences. My aim is to create that link between theory and practice in the classroom.”
Mike Sherwin stays current in his field through participating as a member of The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and The Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He has previously served on Penn State University’s Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Society’s Advisory Board, and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt from ASQ, the American Society for Quality. Professor Sherwin resides with his wife, son, and daughter in Valencia, Pennsylvania.
Logistics and Operations (BUS 661) with Professor Mike Sherwin is an elective course for students in Chatham’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, specifically for those in the Supply Chain Management Concentration. This concentration prepares students to be drivers of innovative change and creators of strategic value for businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Students in the Supply Chain Management concentration will gain a theoretical understanding and hands-on experience with global procurement, logistics, operations, demand forecasting, sustainability issues, and other topics critical to roles in the field.
