Advisory Board Spotlight: Lyn Doverspike

Chatham University’s Business and Entrepreneurship Department is honored to have Lyn Doverspike as a member of the business programs’ Advisory Board. The board’s mission is to assure the strategic growth and advancement of the B&E Department. The board provides feedback on the B&E Department’s plans and assists the department to strengthen their relationships with the community. Board members also attend campus events and provide students with connections to launch their careers, which includes finding internships and entry-level jobs opportunities for Chatham University students.

Lyn Doverspike has served as the Director of U.S. Commercial Service for their Pittsburgh location since 2003. The U.S. Commercial Service primarily acts as the export promotion agency of the U.S. government. They have offices in over one hundred major U.S. cities and in over seventy countries within American Embassies and Consulates.  Ms. Doverspike addresses the exporting needs of companies in thirty-six of the sixty-seven counties that Pennsylvania regularly provides assistance.LDoverspike-Head-Photo-AAA-300x292

In 2008, Ms. Doverspike received the Bronze Medal award, the highest award granted by the Undersecretary of Commerce of the International Trade Administration, for her outstanding managerial skill.  Ms. Doverspike received the William Morton Memorial award in that same year for her efforts in rural exporter outreach.  In 2005, Ms. Doverspike was named Manager of the Year for the International Trade Administration and received the Assistant Secretary/Director General 1999 Innovation Award for Leadership for her work in global branding of the U.S. Commercial Service.  During Ms. Doverspike’s tenure with the Commercial Service, she served in extended temporary duty assignments at U.S. Embassies in Belgium, Slovakia, and Austria as the Acting Commercial Attaché overseeing staff and U.S. commercial interests within those countries.

Prior to joining the U.S. Commercial Service in July of 1997, Ms. Doverspike brought with her seven years of broad international business experience gained at the Japanese trading company,  Mitsubishi International Corporation.  At Mitsubishi, Ms. Doverspike was responsible for managing numerous multimillion dollar accounts engaged in both importing and exporting of various goods ranging from mill component parts to chemicals and pharmaceuticals.  Ms. Doverspike has initiated, negotiated, closed, and executed international contracts and is credited with assisting in the export sale of the first time that U.S. Steel components were used in a Japanese power plant.  Ms. Doverspike received a B.S. in Business Administration from Duquesne University.

Ms. Doverspike was the keynote speaker at the Fall 2014 Undergraduate Business Student Retreat.  This annual retreat provides students with professional development workshops, networking opportunities, business etiquette training, leadership coaching, and personal finance advice.  It is one of the many professional development opportunities the B&E Department provides for its students to make them world-ready.
