The third week of October is Teen Read Week. We have put together a display of some of our favorite YA books, including Forever, That was Then, This is Now, The Book Thief, and of course Harry Potter.
Juvenile and young adult books often come under fire by parents or religious leaders for “inappropriate content”, but what makes so many of these books so powerful and important is the willingness of the authors to address difficult questions or concerns young people might have. Social issues such as violence, drug use, rape, teen pregnancy are things that concern us all and sometimes a novel can help a teen feel those concerns are being addressed on their level. But just as these issues, and our other day-to-day choices on friendships, relationships, and work, don’t get figured out after high school, these books can still resonate with us.
What were some of your favorite books growing up? Give them another read, or pick up one of our suggestions today.
